Tampa’s Surgical Technology Program Adds New Training System for Students

At Concorde, we pride ourselves in providing quality hands-on training for our students. That's why we are so excited about the new equipment for our Surgical Technology program in Tampa, FL.

This September, Tampa's Surgical Technology department purchased 3-Dmed's Minimally Invasive Training System (MITS). "We purchased the equipment so that we could be proactive in providing the students with simulation equipment" said Nicole Lambert, Surgical Technology Program Director at Tampa, "This trainer is specific to the Surgical Technology programs because it is designed to surgically enter and visually examine the abdominal cavity, and we are training the students to assist the surgeon during the procedure."

Helping students grow

The MITS will provide students the opportunity to operate laparoscopic instrumentation and control the video camera appropriately. It involves a simulated abdomen "that will allow students to place a tray of organs and pegboards inside for surgical simulation" Lambert said, improving students' dexterity and hand/eye coordination.

"Minimally invasive surgery is extremely common and preferred by most patients because recovery tends to be shorter and post-operative pain is less than traditional open surgery," Lambert explained. "A surgical technician will usually do multiple laparoscopic procedures per day."

Preparing for the future

"Preparing students using this equipment lessens the learning curve that can occur with using unfamiliar technology in the workplace. Not only do the students learn to operate this equipment, they learn how to troubleshoot issues that arise" she said.

This could result in students becoming more marketable and desirable in the field because they may not need as much intensive training during orientations. "Our students will have the opportunity to learn placement for the trocars and the use of laparoscopic instrumentation prior to their clinical rotations," Lambert explains. "This builds confidence and skills needed for the advancement of knowledge toward the next level of minimally invasive surgery."

Tools for careers

Concorde is committed to providing students with the tools needed to train for the growing career fields in health care. "We are getting students prepared to cross-train for Robotic Surgery due to it quickly becoming a new trend for minimally invasive surgery," Lambert said.
