Career Outlook

Nurses are Key to a Health Care System

The nursing field is expected to continue to grow nationally, driven in part by projected growth in the population and aging baby boomer generation.

Growth is expected for a number of reasons, including and increased emphasis on preventive care; growing rates of chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity and demand for healthcare services from aging population. While people live longer, more people will retire, and this will include nursing professionals.

While the very population that needs nursing care grows, the gap in active nursing professionals will grow. A challenge that will drive additional demand for skilled nursing graduates.

What Does it Feel Like to be a Registered Nurse

It can be invigorating, fulfilling, stressful, exhausting, frustrating and enlightening; often in the same moment. The opportunity care for patients in need with dignity can be gratifying.  Helping a patient or client through post-operative treatment or administering care and comfort through their final hours can truly make a difference. You can find dignity in the simplest tasks such as bathing a patient. The gratitude from patients and their families can fuel your day.

The intellectual challenges of patient care and the healthcare system can stretch your mind. But at the same time, the collegial relationships with other health professional will buoy you in tough moments. For many, nursing defines who they are.

What is a Career  and Academic Path for Registered Nurses

Graduates of an associate degree in nursing (ADN) program can "bridge" to a bachelor's in nursing (BSN) degree program in pursuit of increased clinical and supervisory responsibilities.

BSNs can go on to pursue advanced degrees in a variety of specializations like oncology, pediatrics, etc., as well as careers as a nurse practitioner or nurse educator. Many RNs take on academic roles, training future nurses. Others assume health management positions in the insurance and pharmacy sectors.
