Concorde Career College, Lamplighters, Student Ambassador program

At Concorde Career College, our teaching philosophy and classroom model are much different than traditional four-year colleges. From day one, you're placed in a cohort that will quickly become your family as you move through your chosen program together.

Whether asked to perform a medical procedure on a classmate or getting out in the community, we realize that learning isn't confined to textbooks and lecture halls.

A unique opportunity to grow as a leader while you study is to join the Concorde Lamplighter Student Ambassador program. Each one of our 16 campuses has a Lamplighter group.

A Commitment to Make a Difference

"Lamplighter students support our students by tutoring and being role models," said Natalie Gaspard, Learning Resource Coordinator and Lamplighter Advisor at our Kansas City campus. "New students look up to them and know that students wearing black scrubs [all other students wear blue scrubs] will help them at a moment's notice."

Beyond being "Grade A" cheerleaders, Lamplighters are involved. Our Lamplighter Student Ambassadors participate in on-campus events such as New Student Orientations, Start Days, Graduation and other high-profile activities.

"The group also works closely with the Student Affairs Department when student help is needed," Gaspard said. "Lamplighters also spend a lot of time helping our community and planning events. So far this year, we have partnered with Childrens Mercy Hospital (CMH), Harvesters, DKMS, and KidsTLC."

Where Passion Meets Action

"In the fall, we attended the KC Cares for Kids walk, which helped raise money for and awareness of childhood cancer," Gaspard said. "Just recently, on campus, we raised money for CMH by holding Mardi Gras and Decades Day events."

"Students were allowed to dress up for these events if they donated money to help Lamplighters buy dinner supplies to cook for the families at CMH. Students will be heading out to the Children's Mercy Family Room (held within the hospital) at the beginning of April to cook for the families."

Lamplighters are also recognized and rewarded with:

  • Distinct black scrubs
  • A Lamplighter pin
  • Bi-monthly leadership training
  • Certificate/award
  • Recognition at Graduation
  • Prestigious resume builder

"It is a great way to help ease in new students, give back to your community and practice networking," Gaspard said. "Employers know (in our area) that Lamplighters work hard and understand group dynamics."

Shirley Sharp, a current Kansas City campus Lamplighter, said, "It's very rewarding, being able to help people excel in something. It also helps you retain information by explaining it to other people. I get to help them reach their goal just like I am."
