Today is International Volunteer Day (IVD). It is a day to recognize the solidarity of volunteers around the world who answer calls in times of crisis. It's for people who help save lives. It's to support those who want to continue living lives with dignity tomorrow. As a health care career college, Concorde stands in solidarity with volunteers making contributions to causes all around the world.
The theme of this year's International Volunteer Day is, "Volunteers Act First. Here. Everywhere." #VolunteersActFirst
Volunteers are the first to respond when crisis strikes. They're the first to respond to humanitarian emergencies everywhere. That never was more evident than this year. There were responses to natural disasters in the Houston area (Hurricane Harvey), Florida (Hurricane Irma) and Puerto Rico (Hurricane Maria). Groups and individuals from all walks of life rapidly descended to all these affected areas and courageously provided vital assistance. Many of these volunteers are still there to this day.
They provide life-saving and protection services to migrants and work in communities to promote health, prevent diseases and respond to basic needs.
As a Health Care Career College, Concorde cares
Concorde has shown through action and its #ConcordeCares program that it not only believes in the "community-based" aspect of its mission statement and core values but lives it as well. Through November, according to statistics kept by the Concorde Human Resources department, Concorde associates had combined for 2,695 hours of community service in 2017.
Leading the way in community service hours was the Campus Support Center in Mission, Kan. Associates at CSC put in 304 hours through November. That was followed closely by Concorde's campus in Memphis, Tenn. which had 288 total hours of service. Concorde's San Diego campus was next at 259. Concorde's San Antonio campus was at 236, and Concorde's Dallas campus and Garden Grove campus both had 228.
Still opportunities to be a Health Care Career College that serves
According to Martin Riggs, Concorde's Vice President Human Resources, Concorde associates have used 30.6 percent of available community service hours thus far this year.
"We're higher than we were last year," Riggs said. "But, there's still plenty of opportunity to use community time before the end of the year."

This year's International Volunteer Day campaign is supported by countless volunteers and organizations, such as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and many others that respond to humanitarian emergencies everywhere.
