Obviously, we like to think our students in our Dental Assistant and Dental Hygiene programs at Concorde receive all the information and training they need for successful careers in the classrooms, labs and in their clinicals and/or externships. But you can never have too much information, right?
For your informational sponges, there just happens to be a little thing called the Internet, and there are enough websites and online resources to keep inquiring minds browsing to the end of time. Seriously, the list of online assets is endless. In case you haven't been steered to them yet, let us take a few words to point some of them out.
Associations, societies and other professional organizations
Jill Massey, RDA, and Director of Concorde's Dental Assistant Program in North Hollywood, CA, pointed to no fewer than 25 different websites where she often guides her students.
"Many of the websites we use are specific to California," she said.
Start with the Dental Board of California (www.DBC.CA.gov), which provides licensure for dental professionals as well as provides updates in dentistry around the state. The Dental Assistant National Board (www.Danb.org) provides Das with national certifications.
Then, there are professional organizations such as the American Dental Assistants Association (www.Adaausa.org) and California Dental Assistant Association (www.Cdaaweb.org) that not only provide membership but also continuing education units (CEUs) necessary to maintain licensure.
Websites like www.Dentaljobs.com, www.Mydentaljobs.com, and www.Dentalworkers.com provide job leads. Massey also steers her students to YouTube for various procedural videos.
Specific websites for dental hygiene
Marla Dunlap, RDH, BS, MDH, Director of Concorde's Dental Hygiene Program in Memphis, TN has several websites she and her students utilize that are geared specifically to Dental Hygiene, starting with the American Dental Hygiene Association (www.adha.org). Students can earn CEUs at www.dentalcare.com.
"Then, there are governmental websites such as the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov/ooh/Healthcare/Dental-hygienists.htm), which provides employment information such as salary ranges and job outlooks. The American Dental Association also has a good resource at www.ada.org/en/education-careers/careers-in-dentistry/dental-team-careers/dental-hygienist," Dunlap said.
Other website uses
Those who don't have a Concorde campus near them or would prefer online learning, we also offer an online Dental Hygiene B.S. program. Nonetheless, this is just the tip of the iceberg for online resources for those students in our Dental Assistant and Dental Hygiene programs. To list them all would take a lot more space than we have here.
In addition to governing agencies and courses for CEUs, Cindy Navarro, RDA, Director of Concorde's Dental Assisting Program in Garden Grove, CA points out that students can find opportunities for community service projects in which they can learn and contribute to the community, websites for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and sites that offer review courses and resources for state examinations.
