Concorde's North Hollywood Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) students recently participated in the California Student Conclave hosted by the California Physical Therapy Association (CPTA.) This year's Conclave was located at Mount St. Mary's University Doheny campus in Los Angeles.
The California Student Conclave brings nearly 175 Physical Therapy and Physical Therapist Assistant students representing over 25 schools to one location, giving students the opportunity to prepare for their futures post-graduation and start networking.
Students also gain insight into professional topics such as: How to apply for a license, negotiating salaries, managing their financial future, how to avoid losing your license and more.
The Rules of the 2018 Student Bowl
As part of the event, the students take place in a "Student Bowl" which is held on the first evening of the conclave. It includes teams of three to five people per PT or PTA program that compete in a fast-paced Jeopardy-style competition to see which PT or PTA program has "the brainiest students."
The rules of play are easy: the number of teams will vary based on registrants for both PT and PTA school bracket. Teams consist of 3-5 members, and at least one student should be from each year (1st, 2nd and 3rd year) however, the conclave realizes that some schools may not be able to have a rep from each class due to clinical rotations and that's okay.
Each round lasts approximately 15-30 minutes and includes short answer, true/false, or multiple-choice questions.
All questions pertained to the practice of physical therapy, laws & regulations, and the CPTA. All teams participate in the opening round and the only way to advance further is to win their individual battle. Scoring resets each round rather than carrying over between rounds. Team with most points in the final round wins it all!
Unseating the champs
In this year's Student bowl, four teams matched up against each other: 4-time defending champs San Diego Mesa College, San Diego State University, Concorde Career College in North Hollywood and CSU-Fresno.
Each team gets to make up their own name and the students aren't boring either. SD Mesa was "The Olympians", SD State the "Aztecs", CSU "S5 Eye Winks" and Concorde "Verba's Evil Empire" as a nod to their Program Director, Ms. Verba.
This is the first year that North Hollywood has participated in the event!
Once the dust had settled and the rounds completed, Concorde's Verba's Evil Empire stood victorious defeating the 4-time defending champions San Diego Mesa Olympians. The score of the final round was 7-5 and the students were thrilled in their victory and proud to show all they had learned at Concorde.
"The students will never forget the question no one could answer: What is the smallest muscle in the body?" said Yelena Verba, Concorde - North Hollywood's PTA Program Director, "The answer is the Stapedius."
They now hope to defend the title next year.
