The Physical Therapist Assistant Department has determined the fundamental Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) that are reflected throughout the program and directly related to the student educational objectives.
Graduates of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program will be able to:
- Communicate effectively and respectfully with those diverse groups of people with whom a physical therapist assistant has routine contact in order to foster the achievement of therapeutic and organizational goals. (7D7)
- Demonstrate behaviors that indicate an awareness/understanding of individual and cultural differences and their impact on health care delivery, as well as the ability to alter his or her actions appropriately in response to identified individual and cultural differences in order to foster the achievement of therapeutic and organizational goals. Students who have successfully completed a degree in Kinesiology, Athletic Training, or other Health Sciences area (Associates or higher) containing a minimum of three semester credits of anatomy & physiology may receive a block transfer of six General Education courses totaling 18 semester credits, upon evaluation of transcript. The block transfer includes the courses: BIOL1320, ENGL1310, COMM1310, PSYC1310, PSYC1320, MATH1310 (or MATH1320). The remaining credits required to complete the program is 60.

Yelena Verba, DPT, PhD
What first drew me to the physical therapy field was seeing a close loved one go from being bed bound to complete independence. They could've been bedridden for the rest of their life. But through physical therapy they were able to regain an independent future. Their experience inspired me to pursue a career in physical therapy.
That led me to education. I enjoy helping our students also discover fulfillment by caring for patients regaining their independence. I love the diversity that our students bring to the classroom as it reflects the diversity of the patients they will assist throughout their career.
I want every student to know that this is an extremely rigorous program, and we consider ourselves a partner in the student's educational journey. We recognize that each student is unique and strive to support them in varying ways, even adjusting our instructional techniques. Being flexible in how we teach, is a lesson to our students that their patients' needs will also require that they must adjust their approach to delivering quality care.
We often express to our students the importance of collaboration and teamwork academically and professionally. I am continuously motivated by the great faculty and leaders I work with on a daily basis. Our students' success and opportunity to make a difference in their futures is extremely rewarding.
