Phlebotomy Technicians collect blood samples from patients via venipuncture or capillary puncture. The Phlebotomy Tech facilitates the collection and transportation of laboratory specimens and is often the patient’s only contact with the medical lab. A Phlebotomy Technician also draws blood for transfusions, donations, and research.


Phlebotomist Career Overview

Duties performed by a Phlebotomy Tech differ according to the medical setting, but typical duties may include: 

  • Draw blood from patients or donors
  • Assemble equipment (such as needles, blood collection devices, gauze, tourniquet, cotton, and alcohol)
  • Verify or record identity of patient or donor
  • Converse with patients to alleviate fear of procedure
  • Apply tourniquet to arm, locate vein, swab area with disinfectant, and insert needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube
  • Label and store blood container for processing
  • Conduct interviews, take vital signs and test blood samples to screen donors at a blood bank
  • Analyze information and make appropriate recommendations

Phlebotomy Technician Diploma Program Overview

The Phlebotomy Technician diploma program is designed to prepare students for entry level employment in a variety of settings, including hospitals, laboratories, blood centers, or other health care facilities.


Phlebotomist Certification

Graduates of this program may choose to sit for national certification exams given through the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA) and the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Concorde will cover the first attempt exam fee for graduates interested in sitting for the AMCA exam.

Phlebotomy may be a good entry into the healthcare field. Choosing to further your healthcare career path may include earning a Medical Assistant diploma offered by Concorde. The phlebotomy diploma tuition paid may be applied toward the full tuition of a Medical Assistant diploma program at the Jacksonville campus.

Phlebotomy Diploma Course Schedule in Memphis

This -month program is delivered on-campus two-days a week, making it possible for students to continue to work while pursuing their phlebotomy technician diploma. 

  • Mondays 9am-1pm
  • Wednesday 9am-1pm

Students must attend both class days, each week and complete all requisites in order to graduate.

HPRS1313: Healthcare Concepts

  • Credit Hours: 4.00

This course is designed to provide an introduction to the health care environment. Students will cover common Medical Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology used in the health care environment. Focusing on the health care team and delivery systems, students will learn about legal and ethical responsibilities, safety and infection control and interpersonal communication and behaviors. Students will also obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

PHLB1310: Phlebotomy Procedures

This course provides practical instruction in the field of phlebotomy. Topics discussed include patient preparation, routine and non-routine specimen collection, safety procedures and infection control, documentation, as well as legal, ethical and professional considerations and other roles of a phlebotomist in healthcare. Students will practice phlebotomy skills for venipuncture and capillary punctures in a laboratory setting. A minimum of 30 completed venipunctures and 10 capillary punctures during the lab time are required for successful completion of the course. Prerequisite: HPRS1313


Certification Preparation

Upon completion participants will be prepared to sit for the national certification exams through the American Medical Certification Association© (AMCA), National Center for Competency Testing©  (NCCT) or the National Healthcareer Association® (NHA). Participants should become familiar with all eligibility requirements for the exam they wish to take.

Students interested in pursuing the AMCA exam will have their first time attempt fee paid for by Concorde.

Phlebotomy Diploma Academic/ Career Path

Take your healthcare career further as a Medical Assistant. Concorde Memphis offers a 8-month Medical Assistant diploma program.

Upon completion, graduates of the Phlebotomy Diploma program wishing to continue their education may apply their phlebotomy diploma tuition toward the tuition cost of Concorde's Medical Assistant diploma program. 

The medical assistant diploma program covers computer applications, medical record keeping, and clinical skills including vital sign measurement, lab sample collection, and more.  You can complete this program in as few as eight-months in Memphis at our Memphis, TN campus.

Phlebotomy diploma graduates enrolling into the Medical Assistant diploma program will be required to complete integrated phlebotomy coursework in order to graduate.

  1. Concorde will pay the examination fee for students who have met the graduation requirements wishing to take the AMCA certification exam. Concorde will not cover second exam attempts or other certification exam fees.

Graduates of the diploma program, wishing to enroll into the full Medical Assisting diploma program will receive a tuition discount in the amount paid for the phlebotomy diploma program.
